Mind The Gap Blondie (also known as Spatial Awareness For Girls - Why Women Can't Drive) is an outrageous spoof on the way the beauty and cosmetic surgery industries play on the insecurities of women. By positing such a ridiculous premise in a humorous style the message hits home hard.

Explanation

This clip works on two levels, superficially a misogynistic gag at the expense of women, while cheeky and entertaining in its own right, there is a hidden subtext to this parody on advertising. Mind The Gap Blondie is a satirical commentary that subverts the methods the media uses to make women feel unhappy with their bodies, thus serving the agendas of their advertisers and creating demand for the products that they will then advertise in the same media. Playing on widespread stereotypes such as women being unable to judge distances, being poor drivers and having distorted body image, it then hilariously applies the same logic to the vaginal area.

The video itself features an attractive but unhappy woman driving a small car around the streets, clearly she has been let down by a man, she mournfully pats her dashboard mounted Bagpuss as she drives. She reaches a width restriction and inches painfully through the gap which turns out to be a lot wider than she thinks. The caption that comes up suggests this might not be the only gap she had misjudged the tightness of.

In the typical style of advertising in the beauty industry the suggestion is that the root of all her troubles, the reason her husband or boyfriend has left or is cheating on her, is that she has in some way let herself go and by taking the action the advertiser suggests she could once again be worthy of a man's love.
