Since October 2001, when the war in Afghanistan started, Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp, affectionately known as Gitmo, has played host to 775 detainees. 420 have been released without charge, 3 convicted and another 60 to 80 are awaiting trial.

Conditions at Guantanamo Bay have been the subject of much media coverage, criticism and debate.

While at Gitmo detainees are routinely questioned; the methods, such as waterboarding, employed by CIA interrogators attempting to extract information about al Qaeda have been one of the most controversial and scrutinised aspects of the camp's operation.

Guantanamo Bay Facts

Despite the long standing hostilities between the two countries Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp is actually sited in Cuba.

During his election campaign Barack Obama promised to close down the prison. On January 23 2009, President Obama signed an executive order authorising the closure of Guantanamo Detention Camp within a year.

The interrogation techniques used at Guantanamo Bay were based on a 1957 US Air Force study on torture techniques used by the Chinese in the Korean War to obtain confessions, many of which were false.

Methods used by the Chinese to extract information and taught to personnel at Gitmo include: sleep deprivation, prolonged constraint, exposure, semi-starvation, exploitation of wounds and filthy, infested surroundings.

Because detainees at Guantanamo Bay are not uniformed soldiers, it is claimed that the Geneva Convention does not apply to them. Illegal combatants, as they are labelled, are not granted the same rights as prisoners of war.
